In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
- Luqman al-Hakeem was a pious man. He was a devout worshipper. Allah Ta’aalaahad bestowed upon him great wisdom.
- He was dark-skinned, had a flat nose and was of a short stature. He hailed from a place called Nubah. According to some narrations, he was a black slave and had large lips.
- Some scholars claim that he was judge in the era of Prophet Dawud, alayhi al-salaam.
- A person once asked him as to why Allah Ta’aalaagranted him such a lofty status. Luqman al-Hakeem replied: “Keeping Allah Ta’aalaa esteemed in my mind, fulfilling the amaanah (trusts of people), telling the truth and abstaining from that which does not concern me.
- According to another narration, Luqman told a person that if you want to be like me, you should do the following: lowering the gaze, restraining the tongue, keeping away from temptations, safeguarding the private organs, fulfilling the promises, honouring the guest, taking care of the neighbour and leaving what does not concern you.
- Although there are narrations that state that he was a prophet, they are all weak. The correct view is that he was an extremely wise man.
- Other narrations state that he was given a choice between attaining prophet-hood and being granted wisdom. He chose the latter fearing that he may not be able to fulfil the responsibilities that came with prophet-hood.
- In the Quran, Allah Ta’aalaa mentions ten advices Luqman al-Hakeem offered his son the gist of which is:
- Do not ascribe partners to Allah
- Fulfil the rights of the parents
- Do not forget that Allah is watching everything you do
- Establish prayer
- Enjoin people for good and forbid from evil
- Observe patience
- Do not be arrogant
- Adopt a moderate approach in life
- To be moderate in walking
- Keep your voice unraised
