A Spiritual Journey to the City of the Beloved

” My brother, we were wandering in the deserts on “The Road to Madīnah”. We tasted the fire of hunger and the burning of thirst. We looked at death in the face and we swallowed the bitter gulps of fatigue and fear. An entire day passed like this. We had a Bedouin guide who was always silent – his tongue was locked and he had a permanent gloomy face.

Suddenly his face began to beam and his tongue began to move. He said just one sentence.

I would not have liked a thousand gold coins more than that one sentence. It was a statement which changed our fear to security, our hunger and thirst to fulfilment and satiation, and our fatigue to comfort and relief. His statement was magic – that is if words could have magic in them.

He said: “Here is Uhud.” ”
